Pipe Symphony
April 2020
Spending at least more than 70% of my time indoors made me aware of the sounds the apartment I live in makes. The sound of water pipes, neighbours toilets, heating switches, opened the whole new indoor soundscape that I wasn't aware of before. Among these sounds is an unfortunate one too – the sound of a leaky tap in the kitchen. I was aware of the problem prior to the „big revelation“, but it only got enhanced while I started baking, cooking, cleaning, and using the kitchen more often in the past few months. I started noticing different tones the tap would produce after water droplets would hit the sink, or a pot half-filled with water or a side of a colander. The tonal qualities, of which I became aware of all of a sudden, soon became short whistling melodies that I eventually decided to semi-accurately put on the music sheet. The written melody is now present on a paper card, with a sound module embedded within the paper case. The module features a recording of the leaky tap, and together with the score, they make an artist book Pipe Symphony.
